The ancient Vedic Seers wrote that light was the essence of the universe.
The Upanishads say:
“Agni is Light and the Light is Agni.
Indra is Light and the Light is Indra.
Surya is Light and the Light is Surya.”
Agni, Indra and Surya are cosmic Gods in the Hindu pantheon.
Sri Chinmoy’s comment on this mantra is that:
“Light is Love revealed.
Light is Life manifested.
Light is God fulfilled.”
From: Crown of the Upanishads
Another most significant mantra of the Upanishads is an invocation to the Light of the Divine.
Asato ma sad gamaya.
Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya.
Mrtyor ma amrtam gamaya.
Lead me from the unreal to the Real.
Lead me from darkness unto Light.
Lead me from death to Immortality.
It is through Divine Light that a seeker can escape the bondage of mortal life and be reborn in the Life Divine.
Sri Chinmoy’s poem’s “Light of The Supreme” is a poetic prayer to the Divine power to transform our nature – from limitation and bondage into our real self.
O Light of the Supreme, O Light of the Supreme,
O Light of the Supreme!
Kindle the flame of Liberation within me.
Pour down the ocean of Compassion
Into my heart.
You are my Immortality’s Divinity.
Accept my darkness, bondage, ignorance
and death.
